Tuesday, October 9, 2012 2:15 am GMT
A fire broke out at a home in Independence that serves as a shelter for pregnant teenagers and those who have recently given birth.
The fire started in a bedroom of Mother's Refuge on Delridge Road Monday evening.
Angel McDonald runs the facility and said no one was staying in the room where the fire started. Only one of the young mothers and her child were home when the fire was first reported and they got out safely.
McDonald said the home sustained extensive fire and smoke damage. The teenagers will get temporary housing at a church just a few blocks away.
Five teenagers and two babies lived at the house before Monday's fire. Three of those teenagers are pregnant McDonald said.
